Kalij Pheasants
West of the Ayeyarwady river, these dark feathered birds find their homes deep in the thickly overgrown
ravines in the foothills of the Himalayas. Eight of the nine recognized subspecies have grey legs, a clear departure from the red legs of a Silver. In areas where these families overlap, the hens are almost indistingushable, the only way to tell them apart is by the color of their legs.

Tying with Kalij Pheasant Feathers
The Ayeyarwady River flows north to south through Burma. All 15 subspecies of the Silver Pheasant are found east of the river, while all Kalij are found west of the river. Male Crawfords and Lineated are very similar, however, the hen's feather patterns are quite different.
Fly tying literature ofter refers to an Andersen's pheasant as a naturally occuring subspecies. However, it is now widely accepted that an Andersen's is a hybrid between a Silver and Lineated. This would account for the darker V pattern in the feathering

Pheasants
All pheasants are native to Asia. There are 52 different breeds of these beautiful birds, 17 of which are listed as endangered.
Habitat destruction and hunting has reduced the number of these birds in the wild. The Hainan Peacock Pheasant, thought to be a subspecies of the grey, is one of these and is one of the most endangered birds in all of China. Today it is at greater risk of extinction than even the Giant Panda.
None listed here are in such danger - but with habitat destruction and population growth, it's just a matter of time.
