Crested Fireback Pheasants
These large colorful birds are found in the hot and humid lowland forests of South East Asia. They are vocal in nature, always at the ready to set off the alarm at even the slightest of disturbances. Males develope razor sharp spurs that often measure 3 inches and longer.

Tying with Crested Fireback Pheasant Feathers
Crested firebacks have some of the most beautiful color patterns of any pheasants. The feathers found on the upper back that give the bird its name are everything from yellow, to gold, to metalic purple and blue.
Oddly enough though, none of the classic literature makes any mention of these spectacular feathers being incorporatied into any patterns. Only on occasion do I see artistic free style patterns using a few of these feathers.

Pheasants
All pheasants are native to Asia. There are 52 different breeds of these beautiful birds, 17 of which are listed as endangered.
Habitat destruction and hunting has reduced the number of these birds in the wild. The Hainan Peacock Pheasant, thought to be a subspecies of the grey, is one of these and is one of the most endangered birds in all of China. Today it is at greater risk of extinction than even the Giant Panda.
None listed here are in such danger - but with habitat destruction and population growth, it's just a matter of time.
