Crawfurd's & Lineated Kalij
These two species mark the transition between the families of Silvers and Kalij. Silver Pheasants have red legs and Kalij legs are grey. Crawfords are a bit brighter with red legs, while Lineated are only slightly darker and their legs are grey. The Ayeyarwady River divides the families.

Tying with Crawfurd's and Lineated Kalij Feathers
The Ayeyarwady River flows north to south through Burma. All 15 subspecies of the Silver Pheasant are found east of the river, while all Kalij are found west of the river. Male Crawfords and Lineated are very similar, however, the hen's feather patterns are quite different.
Fly tying literature often refers to an Andersen's pheasant as a naturally occuring subspecies. However, it is now widely accepted that an Andersen's is a hybrid between a Silver Pheasant and a Lineated Kalij. This would account for the Andersen's darker, tighter "V" pattern in the male's feathering.
The same uses apply for these feathers as other silvers but with a darker look. Again, the saltwater tier can use the crests for any baitfish pattern with dark or blue backs.

Pheasants
All pheasants are native to Asia. There are 52 different breeds of these beautiful birds, 17 of which are listed as endangered.
Habitat destruction and hunting has reduced the number of these birds in the wild. The Hainan Peacock Pheasant, thought to be a subspecies of the grey, is one of these and is one of the most endangered birds in all of China. Today it is at greater risk of extinction than even the Giant Panda.
None listed here are in such danger - but with habitat destruction and population growth, it's just a matter of time.
