Silver Pheasant

These birds appear to be adapted to a more grasslike enviroment where the males white-and-black plumage pattern blends beautifully with the sun-bleeched expanses of grasses. There is considerable geographic variation especially in the males; birds found in the north have longer tails than the south, and as you move from east to west the V shaped pattern becomes thicker, making the birds appear darker.

Tying with Silver Pheasant Feathers

The tail feathers have served the salmon tier in many ways such as in married and mixed wing flies.

Streamer tiers/fishermen are served well with cheeks from body plumage. When dyed or not the body feathers make great throats and opens up other possibilities for the creative tier.

The dark blue crests can be used for underwings for streamer patterns and the saltwater tier make note that these crests make absolutely great caps for blue back baitfish patterns

<malayan peacock pheasant>Pheasants

All pheasants are native to Asia. There are 52 different breeds of these beautiful birds, 17 of which are listed as endangered.

Habitat destruction and hunting has reduced the number of these birds in the wild. The Hainan Peacock Pheasant, thought to be a subspecies of the grey, is one of these and is one of the most endangered birds in all of China. Today it is at greater risk of extinction than even the Giant Panda.

None listed here are in such danger - but with habitat destruction and population growth, it's just a matter of time.
